Disc Brakes
Rim brakes; they brake adequately and its costly to replace worn rims. Disc brakes; superior braking, longer lasting and less maintenance.
Currently there are a few brands offering a disc brake suitable fork/triangle; I tend to stick with Kinetics!
Running discs is not too hard, you just need a new fork, triangle, disc suitable hubs and a suitable drive chain. Drive chain options would include, Nexus/Alfine/Rohloff/Sturmey Archer RK3-8/Derailleur.
Unfortunately the BWR hub is not disc ready, or 135mm OLN so it can become a little pricey. But if you like 3 speed the cheapest option is the S-RK3 hub - http://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/products/detail/s-rk3
At £85 for the hub this option is can bring the cost down somewhat.
I have found that a mechanical calliper with 160mm rotor is plenty of braking power even for a heavier rider.
